Risk, Reputation, and Responsiveness: Managing Nursing and Healthcare Student Complaints in a Highly Regulated Environment

Biography:

Jennifer Green serves as Associate VP of Academic Compliance at Herzing University, where she oversees compliance strategy and alignment with state, federal, and accreditation (ABA, ABHES, ACEN, ARC/STSA, CAAHEP, CAPTE, CAHIIM, CCNE, CoAEMSP, CODA, CSWE, and IACBE) requirements across the US. Ms. Green has 18 years of experience in nursing and healthcare education and serves as an ACEN arbitrator, a CECU Federal Regulatory Committee member, and a Career Education Review advisory board member. She has contributed to ACEN standards development to ensure they remain valid and reliable indicators of educational quality for ACEN-accredited programs worldwide and to AONL workforce initiatives.

Research Interests:

Institutions preparing for nursing accreditation and regulatory reviews often focus heavily on documentation, yet outcomes frequently depend on how effectively standards are interpreted, applied, and demonstrated in practice. This session provides an insider-informed perspective on what nursing accreditors and regulators prioritize during site visits, reviews, and decisionmaking processes. Drawing on extensive experience supporting multi-state nursing programs and serving in accreditation review and arbitration roles, this presentation highlights common strengths and recurring gaps observed across institutions. Participants will gain insight into how reviewers evaluate evidence beyond surface-level compliance, including alignment between policies and practice, clarity of documentation, consistency across campuses, and the institution’s ability to demonstrate continuous improvement. The session will explore key areas of focus for accreditors and regulators, including student outcomes, faculty qualifications, clinical learning environments, and governance structures. Particular attention will be given to areas that frequently result in findings or follow-up actions, as well as strategies for proactively addressing these risks. Participants will also learn how to better anticipate reviewer expectations and prepare narratives and evidence that clearly demonstrate compliance. Through practical examples and lessons learned, attendees will leave with actionable strategies to strengthen institutional readiness, improve internal processes, and reduce the likelihood of adverse findings. This session is designed to demystify the review process and equip institutions with the knowledge needed to approach accreditation and regulatory engagement with greater confidence and clarity.
