Abstract Title:

The importance of clear communication in the health fields when you are away from home.

Biography:

May 2025 – Present 2026 --Teach Medical English to doctors and nurses working at the Serena del Mar Hospital, Cartagena, Colombia. I prepare them to pass the ECFMG.

(ECFMG stands for the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates Certification) which is the official credential that confirms an international medical graduate (IMG) has the clinical and communication skills required to enter U.S. graduate medical training program exams.

-September 2015 to December 2024--Retired from teaching English nine years including,

5 years of teaching Medical English, at Santa Fe College, Gainesville, Florida.

-August 2011-July 2015--Taught four years at the English Language Institute (ELI) of the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. My students were from all over the world including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar. I was assigned those students, because I had studied Arabic for four years at the United Nations, Staff training program.

-1973-2011--Worked in English, French and Spanish at United Nations Headquarters in New York for 37 years, from 1973 and retired in 2011. Worked in the General Assembly Affairs Department, the Legal Affairs Department, the Peacekeeping Operations Department, the French Translation Service, the Conference Services Department, and the Information Services Department as a Tour Guide giving tours in English, French and Spanish.

While at the UN, I was stationed in Peacekeeping Operations in Cambodia, Haiti and the Democratic Republic of Congo, all French speaking countries.

-1983-1986--Masters in TESOL, Teaching English to Students of other Languages

-1971-1972 worked on Masters in French at the University in Nancy, France and Queens College, part of the City University of New York.
-1967-1971 – Graduated Cum Laude from Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia, with degree in Education, French and Spanish.

Research Interests:

I have taught Medical English at Santa Fe College, Gainesville, Florida for over 5 years, including Anatomy, Physiology and Terminology. My students have been health professionals arriving in the US from many Latin American countries, as well as Puerto Rico, after Hurricane Maria, Russia, Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, China and Korea. as well as to doctors working at the Serena del Mar Hospital in Cartagena, Colombia, so they can better communicate with international patients. Some professionals want to emigrate to the US or the UK and work in English.
